When to Use a Propagator: A Quick Grower's Guide
Not sure when to get started? Here’s a handy guide to help you make the most of your propagator all year round:
Late Winter to Early Spring (January–March)
The perfect time to start sowing early crops indoors, especially if you're using a heated propagator. Great for tomatoes, aubergines, chillies, and early bedding plants.
Spring to Early Summer (April–June)
As the days get longer, switch to unheated propagators for herbs, salads, and quick-growing flowers. Use this time to harden off plants before moving them outdoors.
Summer (July–August)
Ideal for cuttings! Root softwood or herbaceous cuttings using a ventilated propagator to maintain humidity and reduce transplant shock.
Autumn (September–November)
Continue taking cuttings, and use your propagator to overwinter tender seedlings or start winter lettuces and greens under cover.
Winter (December)
Clean and prep your propagator ready for the next season. You can also use it to experiment with microgreens indoors.
