Sow Smart: Top Tips for Seeding a Lush Lawn
When’s the best time to sow lawn seed?
Spring (March–May) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal. The soil’s warm, moisture levels are just right, and there’s less chance of scorching sun or sudden frosts.
How do I prep my lawn before sowing?
Start by raking the area to remove any moss, weeds or debris, then loosen the soil to help the seed settle in. For patch repair, rough up the soil surface with a rake to give your new grass a better grip.
How much seed do I need?
A general guide is 30–50g per square metre for new lawns and around 25g for overseeding.
Do I need to water it?
Absolutely! Keep the soil consistently moist while your new grass is germinating—especially during dry spells. Once it starts growing, ease off to encourage deeper roots.
How long does it take to grow?
You’ll usually see shoots in 5–14 days, depending on the variety and conditions. Full coverage may take a few weeks.
